Introduction of Center

European Union is one of the most important cooperation partners of China. It is a necessary part of the current Chinese scientific research that studying the European unique law system, the European philosophy origin and its influence to the modern life, the European regime characteristic and its function, the European economics and trade policy's orientation and its effect etc .

European Studies Centre of JiLin University was established on November 5th, 1998. Now, it has been an important research institution in China which studies the European integration, the European economic and political development. For several years, the ESC has been carrying on the European studies. We have established the European economic and financial research group in which the director of ESC Professor Du Li is the academic leader, and the other research groups which carry on studying the European law, the European politics and the international relations, the European philosophy, the European culture and education. The ESC obtained a series of research results of high levels. At the same time, The ESC organizes and participates in actively international and domestic academic exchanges. The director of ESC Professor Du Li, other academic leader and the researchers have visited Europe for several times. The ESC has established broad cooperation relations with many famous universities and research institutions in Germany, Holly, Austria etc, carried on the domestic academic exchanges actively and established close academic connections with the ESC of other universities in China. In addition, the ESC used its own superiority to carry on the curriculum development and strengthen information network construction and the achievement demonstration of the ESC. The " Chinese-EU: Cooperation and development", edited in chief by Professor Du Li, has been published officially in November, 2005.

The ESC of JiLinUniversity studied out "European regional policy and its implication for the transformation and vitalization of northeast china's traditional industrial regions" and won bid during the ESCP's inviting public bidding organized by European Commission. The ESC signed the grant contract officially with "EU-China: European Studies Centers Programme" on November 30th, 2005.Both sides of the contract agreed on setting up the researches curriculums on Europe, carrying on the cross-disciplinary researches with the European partners, promoting personnel exchanges and the academic exchanges between EU and China, constructing dialogue platform through sponsoring the discussion forums and the seminars and promoting publications related matters concerned. Signing the contract symbolize the programme applied by the ESC of JiLin University has started officially and the ESC has walked into a new development stage.

Background of setting up for European Studies Center of Jilin University:

Europe plays a very important role in the development of the whole world's regional polity, Economy, Law and Culture etc. Especially, after the setting up and running of EU, the operating of Europe in economy, trade and law not only has distinctive features, but also has close relations with other regions. The philosophy, culture, political institution, economic performance pattern and legal system of Europe have produced and are just exerting great influence on the development of European and world's structure.

With the implement of the opening-up policy, our country has a closer contact with Europe in some respects such as economy, etc. day by day and EU has become China's third largest cooperative partner next to United States and Japan. Particularly in recent years, with the deepening of our country's open degree and the further concern of Europe to our country's development, the contact between our country and Europe is wider and deeper. So, studying the particular legal system, the philosophy original and its influence on modern life, the political system features and its function, economy & trade policy inclination and its effects of Europe should be an indispensable part of science study under open economy condition.

setting-up and running:

On the basis of demonstrating the situation and trend of the development of social science study, Jilin University set up European Studies Center of Jilin University officially on Nov 5. 1998.
       After its running, the center has acquired a series of research achievements in the fields of European Union law, European and international relation, trade policy post- enlargement of European Union etc. and offered some courses such as European Politics, Regional Economic Law etc. to train undergraduates'and graduates'observation and study capability on European issues.
