What is the Erasmus Mundus Programme?
The Erasmus Mundus programme aims at improving the quality of higher education in Europe and at promoting intercultural understanding with third countries. With a budget of EUR 230 million for the period 2004-08, the programme is implemengted through four concrete actions:

Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses
Erasmus Mundus Supports European top-quality courses at Masters level in order to promote the EU as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. They are integrated courses of one to two years offered by at least three universities from three different European counties. They foresee a study period in at least two of the three universities and lead to the award of a recognized double, multiple or joint diploma.

Scholarships for third country students and scholars
In order to encourage graduate students and scholars form all over the world to obtain qualifications and experience in Europe, a scholarship scheme for highly qualified third-country nationals is linked to the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses. Students receive scholarships to follow the Masters Courses, to teach or do research.

Partnerships with third-country universities:
In order to encourage European universities to reinforce their worldwide presence, Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses can establish partnerships with third-country higher education institutions.
These partnerships will allow EU graduate students and scholars participating in Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses to study or word at third-country partner universities.

Enhancing the attractiveness of European higher education
Erasmus Mundus will also support projects aimed at improving the accessibility and en hancing the profile and visibility of higher education in Europe.
Who can participate?
[Action 1]
is open to higher education institutions of the European Union and the countries of the European Economic Area/European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). The candidate countries for accession to the European Union (Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey) are likely to participate as from 2006.
[Action 2]
scholarship are destined for top-quality third-country graduate students and scholar participating in Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses. Third countries are all countries in the world with the exception of those listed under Action 1.
[Action 3]
partnerships can be established between Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses and third-country higher education institutions. Under this action, mobility grants are destined for European Union graduate students and scholars participating in Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses.
[Action 4]
Activities are open to higher education institutions and other bodies involved in higher education around the world.
How can I apply?
The European Commission publishes annual calls for proposals.
Applicants have to apply to the European Commission, except for scholars and students whose scholarship applications have to be addressed to the respective Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses directly.
There is an Erasmus Mundus National Contact and Information Point in each participating country in Europe.
